Nearly 100 people completed the survey. Highlights of the data include:
General anxiety and fear of eating are biggest concerns of children with food allergies
Less than 50 percent of parents of children with food allergy indicated that their school recognizes food allergy as a disability, keep food out of classroom celebrations and activities, and provide allergy awareness information to students
Educational programing for K-12 staff and students was selected as one of the most valuable resource in helping manage food allergies
Confidence that the ambulance personnel could provide appropriate treatment was indexed lowest in the emergency response/ambulatory care experience
The CEC identified three goals to focus on in the three-year plan. Within those three goals are multiple objectives, some of which are summarized below.
Goals 1: Help schools provide a safer and more inclusive environment for school-aged children with food allergies.
Train members of the CEC to present the FARE Education Network program to local schools
Have a presence at school-related professional conferences
Share Teal Pumpkin and Be a Pal materials with schools in underserved communities
Host an annual back-to-school workshop to address food allergy management challenges
Work with local school superintendents to gain support for food allergy policies
Goal 2: Increase the knowledge of the local restaurant staff on food allergies, their severity and training programs available to them.
Have a presence at restaurant-related conferences/events to disseminate resources and food allergy online training options
Research and initiate steps toward legislation requiring food service mangers to undergo food allergy training
Goal 3: Increase emergency responder’s access to food allergy training and resources to help them identify and treat anaphylactic emergencies
Assess local EMS food allergy training requirements and emergency response processes
Have a presence at EMS-related conferences
